I think its the creators artstyle or the artist artstyle and is their preference as cute not every thing has to be realistic

Looking closely at the ear style to the heads and hairlines it gives me updated Detective Conan style. It definitely might not be what everyone likes, but having grown up with that and other 80s and 90s anime and manga this is really smooth.

All the characters use the same base, regardless of gender. The child looks like it’s head would unbalance him cause it’s just huge and have to much of those mature features.
