Sighhhhh Jo is not the second option at all. He choose to protect Jo. He left on his own accord as to not put Jo in danger. Ian don't even believe that Jo is an option for him because he doesn't believe he deserves someone like Jo.

As a Jo fan from the start, I don’t like how Jo will always be Ian’s second option. It’s clear that Ian will always choose TJ over Jo. I’d actually prefer the endgame to be Ian and TJ, so that my boy Jo can have his own love interest, someone who will always put him first.
