All of these events just slowly ate at him and his mentality of “everything will be fine if we work hard together.” There was so much love and compassion at first, but it was inevitable with her debts, marrying young, running away with barely any money, etc. They just didn’t have the resources and couldn’t prioritize what they wanted to. It all leads to his self pity of not being able to do enough, feeling like there’s no way out of the situation they're in, and resentment that lead to taking her for granted. It’s just an explanation not a justification for how he’s changed. It’s sad to see but realistic compared to obsessive ML with high status gangster background taking an interest in an older woman with nothing LOL.
