This is probs based on japan where most of the time girl idol group are famous especially toddlers and teens and boys group and not really popular if they are not host clubs(you can probs make out what I mean here)the song lolicon is a great example of what is popular in japan
He definitely aren't trans tho writer don't usually make people trans if they do it would be more like magically growing male parts and losing them(but that's when the main selling/focus is on that factor/fantasy)

My million dollar question is why the hell were they making a boy crossdress as a girl for an idol career sodjdieijeifdudjdu... It's not uncommon for crossdressers to be on tv and even sing but a 8 yr old crossdressing idol is kind of pushing it... Ig fraud/document forgery is on the table but for now I like to think that maybe he is trans (this is my headcanon so feel free to disagree but don't act like I'm trying to state a fact here lol)
