A homophobic theatre kid who’s a washed up idiot not even in college dating a girl who isn’t even into him.. dude can kick rocks. People into theatre are not all about acting. Drag is performance that heightens a lot of what makes theatre great. Hope the asshole gets dumped.
Also I have to appreciate how grounded this story is. It’s always something that I’ve considered, that Luke wants to pursue acting seriously and how being in an mlm relationship going into the entertainment industry is seen as a big ‘impediment’. Inherent homophobia derides acting opportunities. But even on a smaller scale, struggling to be out with your partner but not as a couple is a very real queer experience. I think especially in places with a homophobic general mindset queer couples are very conscious of how they’re perceived and what they can and can’t do.
I like that them being attracted and into each other isn’t enough, that love is still a struggle. But it’s something they’re willing to work through. Good writing.
