It's not a bad trope/setting to me, if the authors actually got deep into the mafia business, wrote a complex plot, but it's almost always used just to excuse the characters' horrible behavior. We get nothing of the mafia itself, it's just a "status" for the characters, usually the top, to excuse him being awful. "He's in the mafia, that's why he sucks."
I'd kinda like a mafia BL where the top, heir or boss to a mafia organization, met the sweetest man ever who works as a barista/bookstore clerk/receptionist/waiter or something, they talked more and more each day (it has to be slow burn), he fell in love, and then, thinking he's not good enough for the man, tried his best to become a better person, get away from the mafia world and start a normal life for (and eventually with) him. If anyone knows anything similar to this... please give it to me. Don't gatekeep.
im so fucking sick of mafia tropes in bl WHEN WILL THIS END DO AUTHORS NOT KNOW HOW TO INCORPORATE DRAMA WITHOUT DRUG TRAFFICKING AND CRIME????
