I don't think I'll ever prove it (and it doesn't matter) but I'm convinced the author initially wrote He Tian as crushing on Jian Yi, but then shifted gears when Mo got more developed.
He Tian was sniffing Jian Yi, calling him cute, and very touchy feely to start (yes, I'm rereading this for the twelfth time)
