basically got hit as a kid "for his own good" as a child by the dad cuz he's illegitimate. inferiority complex towards enzo cuz he's the real son. delulu towards ruby. the flashbacks are painting him as a victim to gain sympathy
rather than gaining sympathy it's showing things in his perspective. In his mind he truly believes that he did no wrong and everything is so that he and ruby can live happily ever after. The man is delusional and psychotic. These chapters are basically to nail that in
