And hate to say it, but Claude caused most of the problems, even more than the Bad Possessed uncle. But well, I'm just glad Diana got the chance to "Talk" to Claude about "Everything". Since Claude really did end up killing Athanasia, Lucas hinted that Athy had a past life other than what she knew. The novel she read was probably her real past life she experienced. Just think of Black magic as modern day Dr*gs, and Claude used it and ruin the lives of his biological daughter and his citizens, since lovely princess is hinted to have ended up in chaos. Plus, he disregarded his lover's life that she choose to risk for their daughter, he ends up killing.
And in the novel version, there's another dimension world of Lovely princess, which Athy went by accident and met the other Athanasia. Which kinda proves that if Athy wasn't a reincarnated person and if Lucas hadn't intervened in anything, they would have followed the world of Lovely princess or the tragic end that the Athanasia in Lovely princess would have experienced. Also, I remember a part of the novel side story, where Another would Lucas was looking for Athy, he stumbles upon an alternate world where Diana was still pregnant with Athy, Lucas takes unborn Athanasia's immense magic power (which was blackie that hasn't been formed) cuz he was low on mp, anyways, as a result that alternate world version is where Diana survives and Claude won't have reason to dabble in black magic, probably resulting to a happy family.
