I think he was definitely already abusing her, but in his pov its as if ruby liked him too. She probably DID say those things in order to not get beaten up by him, but he only recalls "the good memories in which ruby is also happy with him". He doesnt recall him beating her up as somethinf bad and he doesnt understand that ruby treats him gently in order to protect herself from getting even more beaten up. Its basically her protection mechanism and he thinks its her true feelings.
