My Indian grandpa did it in the 50s europe... He wasn't rich, but he was adventurous and didn't mind begging or hitchhiking to get around. He looks mixed (we kinda suspect there's anglo mixed somewhere in the lineage but no way to prove it), and had self-studied English and German, and picked up some Dutch on the way. He was a trained mechanic so he fixed cars to get money for expenses.
He even had a Dutch girlfriend/fiancee for a while. My mom still jokes that if he had been brave enough to stay, we would either be German or Dutch. We tried looking her up after grandma passed, but all we could find was an old facebook that hasn't been updated since 2015. So we didn't bother anymore.
