Question

Anyone else see the rise in puritism in manhwa/manga etc? Like everyone mopes and whines about trivial things no one a year ago would really care about? (Ex: toxic semes) they used to just drop it and move on with their lives now you see them whining everywhere. I think a good example to what to whine about is the manhwa “No Reason” because even I was disgusted at it, but some of the things I’ve seen people whine about (like Gale of the God) wasn’t even really that serious?

Ik you guys like to tussle but I’m just wondering if everyone else notices
Edit: I WILL NOT BE SILENCED!

Tbh I think it's more of a case of both sides of the "debate" becoming more extreme. I do think there's been a general cultural rise in puritanism but in regards to bl I've seen both ppl who have huge issues w smut and toxic stories and ppl who r absolute freaks (derogatory). Like tell me y I've seen SEVERAL ppl on their mains on tt saying "no returns after use" is peak and the uke deserved it bc he was dumb??? I'd mostly attribute it to a lack of media literacy on both sides; some ppl can't comprehend that depiction =/= support and others can't comprehend that rape or any other problematic theme =/= story depth. The former type also doesn't seem to get that they're calling for censorship and that that's bad while the latter type don't seem to understand that someone saying rape is gross or just saying they dislike a story they like isn't a personal attack. In regards to ppl being more "sensitive" (i hate saying tjat bc it feels like a conservative dog whistle but idk how else to phrase it), apart from a lack of media literacy, I'd also attribute it to plain old virtue signalling and also an influx of still mentally unfucked new readers lol. At the end of the day the authors r still pumping the toxic stories like there's no tmrw so I don't rlly see what the issue w ppl complaining abt it is. Anyway srry for the long response lol

Yea Some of those whining is warranted. “Some”, cos i also see the trend of rape sa violence that artists keeps on adding even tho its unnecessary, destroying a good potential story (im looking at you bloody moon). Many also just adds it cos its the trend. but yea some ppl also whine for no reason just cos there is, ignoring the fact if it’s necessary or purposeful, like in lowtide in twilight. Also they casually throw heavy words carelessly. Destroying the real meaning of the word like stockholm syndrome. Or a big age gap or characters knowing each other since young suddenly becomes pedo or grooming even though the situation is so far from it. Theyre so quick to call out if one of the description aligns. Also althought famous maintstream bls are toxic or problematic, that doesnt mean there is no fluff wholesome ones anymore. They should just change their selections tbh cos there are also good maintenance wholesome ones.

idk why people use the word puritism for this. i mean, isn't fiction supposed to bring critique with it? if we look at history, female characters used to be treated abhorrently throughout mainstream media. since a whole movement began, and this was called out with it, would yall say they were being puritans too? since its just fiction? if theres racism in a book not being treated like racism, extreme racism being forgiven, glorified, normalised, everyone would call it out, and nobodys gonna be saying "hey, let me enjoy this, and yall can enjoy ur fluffy pieces of work". why is it that people only get mad or worked up (not u op) when others call out the excessive and unnecessary use of sexual abuse? in most stories nowadays, there IS unnecessary rape that is never talked about, that is brushed over, that isn't even treated as a crime. im not against depiction of rape if its done properly. I'll give u an example: I enjoy reading backlight, but we had a chapter of rape that couldve been replaced by something else, and the story still would've worked fine. i still like reading it, but i CAN acknowledge the bad parts and wish they werent there. hell, even the most fluffiest bls nowadays (melting point I'm talking about u) has SA. SA has been so normalised that I saw someone argue jaekyung from jinx isn't a rapist, and I saw them tell real people to get raped so that they find out what it feels like. it's to the extent that fiction is, unfortunately, affecting the reality of some people. also, from what I've heard the nastiness in bls has died down a little? like there used to be a lot more shota and shit and we don't have that as much now I guess? & we can attribute that to people speaking up, and not just consuming mindless trash. hope I made sense!

*also, I've tried reading gale of the god, and iirc the reason I dropped it was bc it had rape within the first 5 chaps and they didn't even provide us with a trigger warning for it. same thing happened with bad apple. & i didn't continue with either of them but I'm sure in both of them it never is acknowledged. try replacing the rape with some other sort of abuse: imagine the ml physically beating the mc up to the point of death, or imagine them hurling the most racist abuses ever at them. & then imagine the author never bringing it up again. that's how it feels.

SORRY FOR THE HOLY YAP IM IN A BORING ASS CLASS

exactly! thanks for bringing this is up, most people on this website wouldn't. another example of rape being forcefully inserted into the plot would be scammed and rammed which otherwise would have been a light-hearted smut comedy.
its so much sadder to watch good bl series get axed while the ones with blatant unacknowledged SA flourish and are promoted.
SA and rape are human rights violation and a serious crime always to be shown in a negative light when depicted in fictional stories. It's not a "trope" as has sadly become the norm *sigh* the reality of our times is indeed quite depressing...

My issue is that people judge others for liking problematic stuff. No problem if they hate it but its crazy what people say about someone that likes something that isnt pure and wholesome. I remember someone here commented i liked rape for liking potn. I can read something w/o condoning it irl. Thankfully I find this is just a sentiment in western fandoms spaces because JP/KR are still producing that stuff. You can pretty much avoid the discourse and enjoy problematic yaoi if you avoid fandom spaces.
