If the author pulls some shit like- "um akshully mc can't end up with the green flag guy because i have the power to make the green flag suddenly turn bad and act out of character because i want him to end up with the red flag so i'll just write WHATEVER."
The amount of times authors have tried to ruin a character that they themselves wrote just to steer the story in a different direction is crazy work.
