That's why Theo tried to help him. But in the end, his inferiority complex ate him and their relationship. They were stuck in that abusive cycle of Theo hoping Gunner would change but again, goes back to it. He RAPED Theo and that will never be undone. Even Theo knows that. Although, it was indeed a slow process for Theo to accept it: Theo knows that there's no saving what they have, no matter what he did. The slowness of the process is actually very realistic, especially if you know how sometimes, victims of abuse goes to back to their abusers thinking they've changed.
