Not to say that this doesn't happen, or that it wasn't sad or that it was his fault. But he should've stuck to his choice of leaving. What's the point of coming to apologize and meet a grave? There's such a thing as too late.
I’m not saying you’re wrong because you have a serious point. But I also think he wanted to meet his son and revisit the house where he was once the happiest. It’s selfish but it’s also understandable, at least to me.

I understood it as the excuse that he left her because of it. I know I would also follow my partner if they were sick and I’d take care of them. It would be hard but if I love them, I’ll do it. He didn’t want that life for her though, and that’s his excuse for leaving knowing he may never come back. If I were his lover and she were still alive, I would be mad ╮(￣▽￣)╭ But it’s nicer, albeit a lot sadder, to hear that those were his circumstances and he didn’t just ditch them for no reason
