I pity Caesar. He is a realistic example of why you shouldn't sacrifice yourself for others. Something like if they are happy, I'm happy. Selfless love, my foot, in reality, expecting something from someone else just because you love them, and sacrifice yourself, never brings a good outcome. When you leave ur happiness to others, it always goes south because you will always have unrealistic expectations.
He loved Ruby and didn't want her to suffer to the point that he broke/shattered from all the torture he received, and with each beating, he forgot his conviction of why he had even stood up. He became delusional and took it as truth that she should sacrifice just like he had to make sure they stay together. Rationalizing and concluding that he loves her and went through all that pain, she must too, because it's a given she will want to sacrifice like he did to ensure they stay together.
It's sad to see that while a young Cesar sacrificed to make sure his sister didn't suffer a broken Cesar inflicted the pain on her that he once shielded her from because he wanted to keep her by his side.
Regarding his weird obsession with her, he reacts to it because she is his only happiness, and unfortunately, he never saw her as a sibling. I'm sure this is what the dad planned: to use Ruby as a leash to keep Caesar under his control. Hence, he made sure Caesar knew that they were by no means linked by blood.
