They must have cut a ton, because it really makes no sense from what they've shown so far. He's just been constantly assaulted by the emperor, and wanting to let him die. Now when the emperor is actually going to die he changes his mind.
the novel version is better. all the scenes were more emotional. this version missed a lot of build up so the mc saving the black emperor did not make any sense
