If I remember correctly it’s because it was a different time where it would’ve been a lot more difficult to come out. Also they both felt obligated to marry and carry on the family line as there was a lot of pressure to do so since linage was important in that industry. When they acted together it made them long for each other and doubt their choice. So they made up being in a fight so that they didn’t have to work together anymore and be tempted to stray from the path they committed to.
