Ik alot of authors like to "throw in" these types of scenes for no reason sometimes especially when the plot is already good so it's unnecessary. But in this instance at least for me it has differentiated K's feelings for Fabian and Jerome very clearly. Many of us have been wondering if there would be a love triangle if Jerome were to appear again and this shows that there would be no such thing. It also shows K isn't always strong as he appears and can have vulnerable moments where he's starting to rely on Fabian for support. He does have trauma he's bound to have nightmares I do hope this didn't actually happen in his past tho.
