I would say unfortunately that’s the point of Eros/Cupid’s arrow. It’s not quite “you fall in love with the first person you see” if you get hit with the arrow, it makes you crazy with desire, going beyond all reason and it is unending. You will chase the object of your desire, your love until you die regardless of your feelings beforehand. He can’t and won’t accept that she doesn’t love him back because the metaphor is ‘love defies reason’ and what better way to demonstrate than plunging the one who governs over reason into an eternal unrequited love to which he cannot be reasoned with. And the tragedy of the story is that he will chase her until her death.
