Legit. Him calling him a child is because Mugo is a God not because he sees him as his "son". He's a "child" in that as a God he is very old and higher up in the hierarchy since he's so powerful. He doesn't see him as a literal child. Hell, we even know now that he didn't even meet him as a child, the mystery Mugo did.
