I think if we were to put it in that time period's perspective, putting another woman's picture in a locket (even if it was a dead friend) would make it look like your gay. All of this considering that she doesn't bother with the marriage prospects that her family gives her.
That was the whole point, people think she's gay. Where in reality, she just really sees Diana as a very close sister. Sir Felix is a nice dude so he knows otherwise.
I think people are quick to judge Lilian's relationship with Diana because Diana was not a noble, nor had any form of status.

I'm sorry but the way they're going about it makes her seem more like a lesbian than anything it's not strange to love a friend, but feeling like you have to hide it or be ashamed of it and then saying "you fell for a dancer" is definitely a choice! Maybe more to do with the translation team? Idk but sus
