There’s clearly something interesting going on with the empress and her motivations (is she evil or was she just radicalized by this system stacked against her from the start? Does that even make sense when we know her extended family who aren’t omegas also behave that way? What level of her abuse of her son is projected self loathing?). She’d like to be in power but she can’t publicly so she made delivering that power to her son her only goal …. I dunno, it’s almost interesting but I feel like the writing can’t really deliver on whatever it’s trying to do.
And the omega/alpha dynamics just make the allegory more confusing vs if this were legitimately along gender or race lines. Like if the MC were a girl the mom forced to pretend to be a boy because of her own self loathing and the limitations of her gender in their royal system (or the MC was transgender, etc). That’s clearly the idea we’re playing with here but the serious themes and politics aren’t landing with this author’s version of omegaverse. Not saying it’s impossible since other authors have managed it, but here, ehh.
