It is in a way because they ended up together, but not too at the same time. The ending of the main story was the revelation of the deepest secret that changes everything, and Michelle didn't know a thing about those entangled secrets of Ian and other people around him, even when the story ended. He became rather a fool as he was the only one who was ignorant of those hidden secrets.

Hello, the major spoiler about why I don't think they should be together is that while Michelle's mother was pregnant with Michelle, Ian was working as a servant under Michelle's father and his father raped Ian. It gets to the point where Michelle's father was sleeping with Ian while his mother was dying in labour. Ian bore that hatred of being raped (rightfully so) but he took it out on innocent children of Michelle's father. He cursed at their family (to the sons actually), he said "the youngest child will be mine". It's crazy because Michelle was just straight out of his mother's womb when Ian swore that.
Very Predatory.

Another major spoiler is that Ian was raped by his stepmother, too! That's why he killed her. He is a victim, but he's also a perpetrator of abuse and rape.

And, as of I know, Michelle didn't know any of that until the end. This has a lot of side stories and AUs too.
