Yeaaaaah I just read the raws and saw that too, yeeted my thoughts out the window. The mum is the main character here, she's the protagonist of their lives lol.
It’s horrifying because if she was an individual unrelated to them and of the same or similar ages to them I don’t think they’d be into her, her being their step mother is an inherent quality of why they are into her that way…
The plot is good, also the way I see it fl doesn't like the mum in a wrong icky way but it seems her and the oldest son both care for the mother in a motherly way its just fl does not know how to express it normally. Its dysfunctional because she doesn't know how to have a mother child relationship properly.
