Story 3/5

Fuck.... the potential this had. Don’t get me wrong—it's not a bad story, but the ending ruined it.

The whole “pretending to be C-class” thing was nice. Sure, the ML being the most powerful person in the world is cliché and overused, but I didn’t mind it. Their relationship was developing well, the characters were slowly getting more screen time, and then it was all suddenly cut short.

The reveal that they went to the SS portal to retrieve the dead body of his brother was… dull. If only they had given us a flashback so we could actually feel what the whole guild felt when they lost Ano—it would've been so much more impactful and emotional. Or even flashbacks of their memories, so readers could actually build affection for Ano.

Another issue is the whole breakup drama. Yes, I wanted angst. I wanted the ML to beg the MC to stay. But the way the author handled it was rushed and poorly executed, with so many time skips and no real weight to their actions. AND on top of that, the entire ending and explanation were just telling, not showing—whether it was about Ano being the ML’s brother, Ano being the real reason they went to the SS dungeon, or the breakup misunderstanding being resolved in literally two panels… and it wasn’t even a conversation between the ML and MC, despite the misunderstanding lasting months and spanning multiple time skips.

Oh, and I also can’t forget how they did my man Shin (Black haired esper) dirty. He was NOT an antagonist until they decided to change it last minute. He helped his guide (who, by the way, was the real bitch), protected him, helped the MC, helped the ML, etc. And suddenly the author made his reason for helping be that he wanted the MC for himself—then claimed that when he was becoming A-class he didn’t want the MC anymore. WHICH IS A LIE AND COMPLETELY OUT OF CHARACTER. WHY GIVE REDEMPTION TO THE BITCH GUIDE AND MAKE MY MAN THE BAD GUY? AIN’T NO WAY.

This was SO good at first. It could’ve been one of the best Esper x Guide BLs—IF ONLY THEY HADN’T RUSHED EVERYTHING.
