They're both looking at it from two different point of views, Riftan is someone who came from nothing ,he was never royalty or nobility and crawled his way up from the ground to get the title he has, Its not a life he'd ever wish on someone, that being said I think he has a onsided view on nobles, yes there are someone nobles who are just ass holes, but there's good people like Agnes, so the noble has its perks and its very cushy and something someone " should want to have".
Maxi is so different, despite being a dukes daughter's, she doesn't or rarely does recieve the perks of nobility , she's abused in her own home, shunned, beaten to the point of a stutter ,she'd put down and eventually sold off to a stranger.
Upon realizing they're feelings for eachother, which only blooms as the chapters come out they but feel the need to provide. For Riftan as someone who wasn't born with luxuries ,wants to provide that "cushy life " for maxi, wants to show her that he can provide that her, that she doesn't want for nothing and have what she want. As for Maxi she wants to prove herself worthy of the multiple gifts he gives her, she doesn't want to return home and or look unless to him and does everything she can to prove that, the magic ,wanting to be close.
Maxi is deeply insecure due her abuse and treatment from people who should be family, I'd sprinkle in a lil abandonment issues in there , she get jealous, scared of his dying, feels inadequate when her magic isn't progress as much as she'd like too.
We're seeing majority of this story through Maxi's point of view so yeah it looks like she moving super slow, but we also see Riftan's point of view...(he's a simp...atrociously down bad) but he keep holding back cause of that on nobles being fragile and can't understand why his Noble wife doesn't wanna stay at home and live a cushy life and Maxi is confused why her husband doesn't realize she just want to be near him, and wants him safe , she's very reckless to put her herself in harms way but it's Riftan, the only person she has that's closest to her.
