Man, it’s really kind of funny in a way…

This Duke is such a thirsty yearner….
Even with that title, there’s no way she’d ever look at him, so he does all these desperate little schemes just to catch her attention. He really really wants Layla to depend on him, and acts like a petulant child when she rejects his offerings.
Layla is too sweet to handle him.
This is the kind of guy that’s asking to be bullied and flustered. I want to ruin his gravitas and perfect facade.

He prob likes her bc she has that innocent hamster vibe. If she truly wanted to get rid of his attention, she’d have to indulge into “i knew it” behaviour i.e fleece him for all he’s got and act spoiled and possessive. It’s because she holds onto that moral purity he’s interested in corrupting her.

I don’t know if she’ll have the guts to try, she’s not a schemer; but to fluster him, she’d have to break his focus and provoke him when he can’t break the act. He’s playing with the social mores and niceties, so she’d have to uno reverse him. Basically act like a brat. Ask for a better position for Bill, secure an exit plan while entertaining him and dip with all the money you can carry.

Let’s be honest though. These stories often end in tragedy. I can’t blame her for wanting to swat the duke like a fly. It’s easy to say what I’d do, but irl it’d be super risky since social credit was everything back then. If you were seen as a slut, good luck finding a respectable job, off to the whorehouse you go. The nobility also had no reason to keep their promises to ‘lesser people’. There were a lot of bastards back then.

I hate to say it, but I think she’ll probably end up like Fantine, a child she didn’t mean to have, running away to a different country with Bill to start all over despite having no funds.

Sorry for the long essay!!!
