In the novel, there are chapters at the end where their first life together is in Ido's POV, and you read his thoughts and truly know what he's thinking.
I can say with a level of certainty that a lot of the problems with them stem from their inability to communicate. Ido with not trusting others and wanting to do everything on his own, and MC with his fear that unless he comes off as perfect and does what he's expected, he'll be abandoned.
I won't talk about the last scenes, but their bond ends up bringing them closer once they clear things up and MC gets his answers. There are things MC has been carrying that Ido isn't aware of, and vice versa.
Their first life together really started on the wrongest foots of all foots. Anything that could have gone wrong, did.
