Im Indonesian and some classmates in real life are actually homophobic and don’t support same-sex relationships, but they still read bl because they say the art style is better than in straight stories, lmao. They’ve even watched a few bl dramas, but still won’t support them in real life. It annoys me so much that I barely talk to them.
Well, I think it’s because they’re hypocritical—saying that they feel it’s wrong and therefore don’t support same-sex relationships, using religious reasons, and turning it into hatred. But on the other hand, they can’t deny the fact of how popular and thriving the bl genre has become :)

i think personally that those who are raised to believe being homosexual is both a sin and choice may know deep down that's not true and therefore not be repulsed by homosexuality but still find it hard to go against the fundamental values they were taught as a kid especially if they're still young. its hard to undo conditioning thats been maintained from a young age, though it's important to at least try.
Had a best friend (ex, thank god) that was obsessed with reading yaoi with just straight up porn. Esp stuff like jinx and whatnot. Could barely read English but was in it for the smut, yet would always claim that she's disgusted by gay people and homosexuality in general (she's deeply religious) That's her logic haha, only stuck around until the end of the school year then dipped, would never speak to her again even if I was held at gunpoint.
