1. It’s seriously just not that deep. 2. 21 in human years is like 1.5-2 years in cat years so yes, he is an adult. 3. Cats are fickle and naive creatures. My cats believe im God just because I control the rain (shower and faucet) and that I control fire (stove) and wind (fan). They even believe I control the day/night cycle (curtains). Cats are smart but they aren’t THAT smart. The vast majority of them are survivalists and have intelligence surrounding survival. They can be trained so they do have other intelligence and they can learn to communicate with humans no matter what style of communication is used. Some cats even learnt to sign food so that deaf owners can understand what they need. Cats, by nature, look cute and naive and soft and small. The world’s greatest predator is the world smallest and cutest little cat and it’s got a 90 something % kill rate. The lion by comparison only has a 60% kill rate. Small and cute and deadly is a package deal. They use their cute and soft nature to seem harmless. It’s something the evolved to have.
Dogs by comparison were born to complete certain jobs. The fighting dog was created LITERALLY and selectively bred to be aggressive and serious and to go for the kill every time. It was created for such a reason for human enjoyment and although they no longer serve that function, they STILL hold that function which is why small dogs are so aggressive and hostile. They also age differently to cats. Dogs have their own age scale.
Nurture is also brought into this. A young domestic long haired cat who has always lived their life pampered until they hit a rough patch is very different from what is essentially a stray mutt fighting for its life from day one. My cats are exceptional at hunting but they are indoor cats and do not know what outside is like. If you find that type of cat naive… it is. It literally doesn’t know the outside world.
Please stop fighting against the fact that every animal is different with different skills and that this is a CAT book so the focus should be on a CAT and not some dog from an entirely other story. We read this for comfort and if that’s not for you, it’s absolutely within your right to stop reading. Let’s give this book the attention and focus it deserves.
