I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love that this author has made both men self aware to know that their situation is toxic and will stay toxic with their stubbornness. Don't know if the author is trying to set up an eventual love story, where these two are able to love each other on a more equal footing, but at least they're taking the time to flesh out the confusion and self flagellation of both men as they look on where this relationship has gone.
