Yes, everything you consumes affects you, of course. Nobody is denying that. Yes, you can be critical of what you read but also you need to be realistic about the purpose of the works youre being critical of. What are the goals of what youre reading? Why is the author telling the story in this way? How is the story best serving the audience? What does the audience expect of it? Etc. All simple things. You also need to realize that sometimes a nut is just a nut and people are allowed to boo characters because of that.
