We don't know who the enemy is, and we're not supposed to know yet. Even the princess criticised them for surrendering before they knew their enemy. The reason why they're currently fighting against the goddess' forces is likely because they were cursed when she returned to the past, hence the label of traitor. If heros exist to correct the story, I assume there's another outside force that interfered with the fate of Townia. I might be wrong though lol, gods are fickle.
