I would say like 51/52 he starts acting pitiful to get Elliot to stay by his side and pity him(I only read up to 53 since I'm reading the free ones as they come out), but even then since he never experienced love he doesn't realize he's doing it out of that and he rationalises that by saying he only wants to be good to him (the rest is a part of ch52 of the novel where he tries to make sense of his feelings/actions so If you don't want to read that, dont read the rest of this reply)
