it's weird to explain but i get it, I had a reason like that too but rather than thinking "he will survive the rumor" I think it's best to put into perspective the pride as a awakener and how you're the one ruining a man's entire legacy, the one you admire and has been with you for so long in a weird world.
even if it's just a rumor, the thought of tarnishing the image of what's almost like a father figure or letting him down after all the trust and effort he put in you.... just bc of your lack of power and foolishness? it'd be best to be defeated and die with honor
