Everything in BL is about clichés, unfortunately. Audience got too used to clichés & the audience itself contribute to the writing choices the authors adopt. Lazy audience needs expected storylines & easy judgments to make.
I have only read a very few stories with really good plots & characters, where the reader is immersed deeply in reading the story, as if he were living the events himself and passing judgments like one of the characters within it, not an outsider one-dimensional reader.
All that aside, sometimes it's really confusing how readers demonize average tops whereas justify and drool over real evil mls like Ilay Riegrow, Zhenya, many others!
There are cliché you can’t avoid, cliché you can put with different ways of putting it and clichés you can avoid. Also it depends on the authors, i like the innocent versus the evil cliché for example.
