at first 99 tries for 20 levels sounds ridiculous - how could he not have beaten it by then.. but just thinking about it: it's 5 life's per stage. 1 or 2 are easily gone, just to figure out what exactly you're supposed to do (especially when you're not overpowered). so add a life to get overpowered per stage. and not only did he probably lose lives in the game, but also in real life. just one little mistake and one of those psychopaths kills you.. additionally you have to keep in mind, that once he does sth different than before, his prior knowledge might not be useful anymore because people act differently, so you start at square one.
keeping people alive also is a bother, and I can see that he didn't care about that once he got to op. so changing the strategy to keep people alive as well would have changed everything again quite a bit and then the prior knowledge would have been useless again
