The manhua does a bad job at portraying this cuz he has to maintain his pretty looks so he constantly looks smug and cocky instead. They're all slightly more likeable in the novel and the MC himself is an unlikable but pitiful character there (except the mcs family and r*pist like they're awful people in every adaption)
