Here is my take, if the autor wanted to write a story like this, On or Off should have never gotten a sequel. The author should have just started a new series/spin-off in the same universe. Doyeon shoul have been introduced in the side-stories of On or Off and this whole "in love with Kang" thing, should have been his backstory, explained in retrospect or mentioned as a burden during his own story. Yiyoung and Kang cpuld appear in it, but they would just be established as existing in the universe.
Everyone would love it, because "omg, new series from the author of On or Off set in the same universe!" with this sloppy writing they're losing the goodwill of readers that have enjoyed the OG series. Really a bummer. I will keep reading, but this whole spin-off just feels weird. I don't see a point why it exists.
