Can someone smarter than me explain the implications of the ending, so I can fully appreciate the story? It was revealed that Maximilian was going blind but I didn’t get the significance of what that meant and Jean was surprised that Maximilian knew him “before they met” but he wasn’t “little pearl” cuz that was the lady right?
All I understand was that apparently Max knew all along about the revolutionaries plan and was on their side, and fully intended to sacrifice himself for the sake of the new republic (and the other revolutionary at the bar was his subordinate)
