It’s probably a bit of a phenomenon called the “sunk-cost fallacy”. He knows he is being used and he knows that’s the promises by the politicians he fights for are lies. But he’s too far deep to turn back because then it would all be for nothing. Essentially, he has spent far too much money, time, and effort into the job and can’t just pull back without losing everything he has been working for.
