thats because he didnt comfort her when Varia cried.
he falls in love with her and learnt the reasons why Varia hate her family. so he come to understand why Varia crying how much the deal means for her.

She was killed and reincarnated(technically regressed) back in time. So unlike Leo who is an outsider looking in. Varia is re-living her life but on her terms this time based on what she originally lived through. Hence all the evidence she collected on her own to give to the duke.
