I have a theory that Sanada's also probably noticed Misuzu's kindness and cuteness when they were in junior high. Sanada probably knows how adorable Misuzu is. And now seeing Misuzu showing those cute expressions because of Kitahara, he's jealous. Sanada's thinking like "Why him not me?" "I was the first one to see you, to know you" "I liked you first" "Why is it that you're showing that kind of face (Misuzu blushing, acting shy, looking cute)?" "What did he do to make you be like that?" something along those lines
Sanada might've had romantic feelings for Misuzu and that's why Sanada associated with Misuzu even though Misuzu's been involved in bad rumors and fights. When he got beaten up so badly because he was known to be associating with Misuzu, and Misuzu stayed away for good; Sanada, he transformed into a delinquent. Hoping they might have a chance of meeting again.
Sanada's an idiot though so there's really no chance for him. He's got zero chance before and he's going in the negatives now. He cemented being in the friendzone because he's actively pursuing Misuzu even though he knows Misuzu's in a relationship. Misuzu needs the mature type like Kitahara who approaches him with no prejudice, very considerate of him, gentle and kind towards him. Plus a lot more good qualities I can't seem to name as of this moment. Kitahara's a frikin green flag. A freaking forest. Like he needs to be cloned. May we all find a love like him.
Anyways, compare Sanada to Kitahara, as previously mentioned he's an idiot. He's bad at communicating, isn't straightforward, wishy washy with his actions and treatment of Misuzu, isn't honest with his thoughts and feelings, is tsundere the annoying kind, doesn't care enough about Misuzu's thoughts and feelings so he'll pressure Misuzu. He'll confess and say he won't give up on Misuzu BS. So Misuzu who wants to just be friends with him will be troubled because Sanada wants to be something else. Misuzu will be all awkward when interacting with Sanada. Misuzu won't know how to face, how to converse with him due to the confession or being courted by him. Like leave Misuzu alone, he's got enough of things to worry about.
Sanada is the second ML that you don't end up liking and wishing he's the ML. No second ML syndrome here. There's no competition. He's annoying at this point. The author should give him his character development soon.
