He made it his fault by apologizing. On his own, consumed only by his own feelings and not thinking of the overall situation, what was just a sad tragedy turned into his mistake because he forced his feelings on them.
It’s not his fault, because without him most of them would be dead with no safe place, food, and basic amenities. I do think he should have cultivated more attack teams than solely relying on this one. But I think they won’t hold it against him because they need him and it really isn’t his fault.
