I don't know if it's media illiteracy or what, but the discourse around chapter 21 proves that sometimes, people just need to stop reading if something makes them uncomfortable. You don't have to like it, but calling people who aren't as upset as you stuff like "r@pe likers" or fetishizers is just immature. Something isn't inherently wrong just because it makes you uncomfortable.
It was obvious from the beginning that this story was not going to be a meet cute romantic comedy. These characters are both heavily flawed men, who interact with others in a toxic and unhealthy way.
The author shouldn't have to sanitize their work if they want to make an adult story with mature themes that has characters who do bad things. Again, you are allowed to criticize it and you are allowed to be disappointed. But some of the backlash is just a result of people not understanding the story or characters.
At this point, instead of lashing out, just ask yourself if you would prefer to read something else. It's okay if you do. Just let the rest of us, or at the very least, let the author have some peace.
+1 exactly! people should know their own triggers warnings and close the browser when they found it. it's the internet. people are so used to being spoonfed anything that it seems the browser is forcing them to read this all the way through
