Long review. I’m like mid way thru the story so maybe my criticism will be revised later but tbh i actually think that the story could have benefited if it was actually a BL. I almost feel like Camellia being a guy would have made the story way spicier, and the challenges of being gay in the nobility would be interesting to navigate. Instead, it kind of removes all the challenges of this scenario.
The story is kind of bare bones too. There’s almost zero chemistry between the leads. It all feels very superficial. The only things they legit like each other about are their looks. Like actually. 80% of the times that the leads think of each other, the only comment about how pretty or good looking the other is. It’s like… I’m fifty six chapters in, and that’s the ONLY thing they say about each other? Like??? The only other time that didn’t revolve around their looks is Claude thinking that Camellia is “honest” where it’s more of her just having a backbone in certain moments, which is crazy? This would’ve maybe been okay but the only reason why camellia is arguing with u in the first place and ur legit insulting her.
This is ironic bc other than the times that the story wants to portray Camellia as a “different” girl, she is very much an unoriginal character. The only thing that the characters ever describe her as is: pretty, fragile because she’s pretty, dangerous to fall in love with because she’s pretty, and other things to describe her that all involve how pretty she is. It would be interesting if this story delved into how basically objectifying this all is, and how terrifying this kind of position would be for camellia, but instead the story doesn’t actually do any psycho-analyzing at all.
In fact, there’s almost zero monologue or inner dialogue that interested me. Camellia and Claude are so one dimensional.
This story is fun but in the bad way, and the art is gorgeous (which is why i’m not dropping this) but I honestly can’t help but think that the “what could have been” ideas are what makes me hold back from thinking this is good. Because the story could be legit good if the characters were written better, and if it was a BL at least there would’ve been a bit more tension, but ehh
