Easy To Be Judgmental

I think it is easy to be judgmental and make a blanket condemnation of Hayate. But here's the thing. First this starts when they're both still young and Hayate while deep down intrigued by Takashi obviously wasn't ready to go there himself sexually. For Takashi things are much simpler, he has already found his sexual identity, and fallen in love. So at graduation it is Hayate who really isn't sure of himself, and makes that offer, and you can blame Takashi equally for accepting it. Further it in Takashi's power to quit the arrangement at any time if he wanted. As he can now.

What I'm trying to say is that, Takashi, despite believing his feelings weren't returned, kept Hayate coming back every year instead of letting him go. Takashi should have rejected the offer of this set up from the get go but instead chose to hold on to Hayate in whatever way he could. He never wondered if this was a problem in Hayate's life, or if Hayate might wish to be released from the obligation. I mean after 10 years the reason he finally decides to stop is to spare his OWN feelings. So while Hayate is no angel and certainly being selfish, so is Takashi. Perhaps they make a fine pair after all.
