This is gonna be long, even though I just bared the bones, and left all the juicy bits out -the psychology and emotion which drove the characters-

The first king, Madeth, and his right hand Lavlan were childhood friends and had a close, though toxic, relationship.
Madeth has always been the one to reap the benefits of Lavlan's victories because Lavlan would give him all the credit.
Lavlan had the ability to see spirits and knew Madeth was loved by them, and even though he was the one to put the crown on the king's head, he felt envious.
In walks Prima who ended up becoming queen and destroying their relationship by planting a seed of doubt in Madeth, who suspected Lavlan of being the biological father of Perseus, the first born prince. This was untrue as Prima failed to seduce Lavlan who then proceeded to call her a whore in the most pleasant way possible.
Lavlan, incapable of forgiving Madeth's lack of trust, left the castle which lead to the slow decline of the kingdom due to the fact that he was the one who took care of everything connected to ruling, except for sitting on a throne. He worked in the village when, 13 years later, Perseus came seeking answers about the rumor that he wasn't really the king's child, but a bastard.
That idea was planted in the prince's head by his aid, Toe, who was the late Queen's half brother and wanted to rule the kingdom himself. Perseus believed him because he was starved of affection and treated rather poorly in the castle due to Madeth's inability to love him while showering his second child with affection. Which was all the more complicated by Perseus' ability to see the angel Lavlan had talked about with Madeth all the time.
Fast forward a few more years, Perseus stole the throne and threw Madeth into a dungeon, manipulated and later betrayed by Toe who was also, apparently, drugging him.
Perseus fell into madness and killed Toe after suspecting Toe's real intentions once he noticed the angel always leaves in his presence, which was something that also happened in the presence of the late queen Prima.
In that time Lavlan decided that the only way to save the kingdom was to become king himself, and finally arrived in the castle to find a mad Perseus on the throne and Madeth imprisoned.
Lavlan ruled and was loved by the people untill his death.
And never again was the angel seen.
