    Steed can be used to describe a strong riding horse of either sex.
    Mare is a mature female
    Stallion is an intact mature male

    "Definition of steed. :horse; especially :a spirited horse (as for war) or swift"
    Though it's mostly used to describe Stallions it can be used for both female as male as "A great Horse" ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶
